Using Ombre Fabrics in a Flower Quilt

Melinda Bula is an award-winning quilt artist and instructor known for her beautiful fusible flower art quilts.  In this class, she will show you how to use ombre batik fabrics to make her new flower quilt, Nasturtium.

Melinda will guide students step-by-step through the process of creating this flower using ombre fabric, including how to maximize the multi-value fabric and select the right color and value in your fabric to make the Nasturtium look realistic.  The pattern includes a supply list and color chart to help find just the right ombre or batik fabrics for this wonderful flower quilt.

Supply List

Finished size: 20” x 16”

Use the color chart to help you shop for fabric colors and yardage amounts.

For example, I used a 14 " x 22" strip of Ombre fabrics from Hoffman of California and Robert Kaufman Fabric. No, solid fabrics.

¨ 1/2 yd background fabric in a dark color or a color you like

¨ 5 yds Steam-A-Seam 2 - 12” wide

¨ Glue stick

¨ Tweezers or stiletto to help you move small pieces around

¨ Large straight pins

¨ Large sharp scissors for paper and fabric

¨ Plastic baggie to store your pattern pieces

¨ Iron and ironing board (except in classrooms)

¨ Teflon pressing sheet (large) - I like Fat Goddess by Misty Fuse, size 27” x 21”

¨ Sulky 40-weight rayon thread in colors that match your quilt and background

¨ Jeans Denim or Top Stitch needles in size 12/80 or 14/90

¨ Cotton thread for the bobbin in a 40 or 50-weight

¨ Extra bobbins

¨ Medium size safety pins

¨ 1/2 yd batting—Dream Cotton, 100% cotton – Request

¨ 1/2 yd backing fabric

¨ 3  yds finish binding
